Welcome to the new Northern Illinois Skywarn website!

Kicking off in June, 2012, (Re-Organized in February, 2015)  Northern Illinois Skywarn is a group of trained severe weather spotters trained by the National Weather Service with a primary purpose of providing emergency communications and weather spotting resources to the National Weather Service in Romeoville, IL, and also to the Winnebago County Sheriff’s Department Emergency Operations Center (EOC).

NILS primarily serves Boone and Winnebago counties in Northern Illinois.  During severe weather, we activate in order to provide storm spotting coverage to the area via many different radio channels–mostly amateur (‘ham’).  Currently, primary communications channels are WX9MCS repeater systems.  (Learn more about radio channels on the “Radio Systems” page.)

Founders of the group are Eric Hultgren and Vince Waelti.  Feel free to contact us for more information as we build our website.
