Kicking off in June, 2012, Northern Illinois Skywarn is a group of trained severe weather spotters trained by the National Weather Service with a primary purpose of providing emergency communications and weather spotting resources to the National Weather Service in Romeoville, IL, and also to the Winnebago County Sheriff’s Department Emergency Operations Center (EOC).
NILS primarily serves Boone and Winnebago counties in Northern Illinois. During severe weather, we activate in order to provide storm spotting coverage to the area via many different radio channels–mostly amateur (‘ham’). Currently, primary communications channels include the WX9MCS repeater systems and the K9RFD repeater systems. (Learn more about radio channels on the “Radio Systems” page.)
Founders of the group are Will Lund and Vince Waelti. Feel free to contact us for more information as we build our website.
